How a Maya mushroom kit is different.

Most mushroom growing kits sold online are inoculated in one state, finished in another, and warehoused for weeks before they ship. Ours don't leave the farm. The block in your box was colonizing on our shelves last week.

The substrate matters more than the marketing copy on competitors' boxes will admit. Lion's Mane, Blue Oyster, and Pink Oyster all evolved on hardwood. We use locally sourced Appalachian oak, maple, and beech sawdust, the same wood these species would find in the forest. Density and flavor reflect it.

And we tell you what almost no kit company will: a grow kit is a starter culture, not a disposable. Outside, in mulch or buried under a log, the colonized block can keep producing for a year or longer. That's how you turn one $25 bag into a year of mushrooms.

Mushroom grow kit FAQ

What is a mushroom grow kit?

A grow kit is a sealed bag of pasteurized hardwood substrate that's already been inoculated with mushroom mycelium and fully colonized at the farm. The hard part, sterile lab work, spawn runs, contamination control, is done before it ships. You cut the bag, mist it twice a day, and harvest fresh mushrooms in 7 to 14 days.

Which mushroom grow kit is best for beginners?

Blue Oyster. It tolerates a wide temperature range, fruits reliably at room temperature, and is forgiving if you forget to mist for a day. Pink Oyster is faster (7–10 days) but wants warmth. Lion's Mane is the most visually striking and the easiest sell to non-mushroom-eaters.

How long does a mushroom grow kit take?

Pink Oyster: 7–10 days. Blue Oyster: 10–14 days. Lion's Mane: around 14 days to the first flush. You can expand the spent block outdoors to keep fruiting.

How much do you actually harvest from one kit?

Half a pound to a pound or more of fresh mushrooms per flush, depending on variety and conditions. The colonized block can keep producing outdoors once you expand it.

Do I need any special equipment?

A spray bottle and a spot out of direct sun. No tents, no fans, no fruiting chambers, no humidifiers. The box the kit ships in is the humidity tent.

Where are Maya Mushroom grow kits made?

Inoculated, colonized, and packed at our small farm in Buckhannon, West Virginia. The substrate is locally sourced Appalachian hardwood, the same wood these species fruit on in the wild.

Can I get a second harvest from one grow kit?

Yes, and you should. After your first flush, soak the bag in cold water for 12–24 hours to rehydrate it, then resume misting. A second flush usually breaks within 10–14 days. See our second-harvest guide for the full method.

What happens to the kit when it stops fruiting indoors?

Don't compost it and don't trash it. Bury the spent block in shaded hardwood mulch outside. Mycelium that's finished inside a plastic bag often thrives once it's connected to soil and can keep fruiting seasonally for a year or more.

Are Maya kits organic and pesticide-free?

Yes. No pesticides, no fungicides, no off-farm contract growing. Substrate is locally sourced Appalachian hardwood sawdust.

Can kids grow these kits?

Yes, they're some of the best science-fair material we know. The mushrooms are gourmet edibles, not psychoactive, and there's nothing to mix, measure, or sterilize. Cut, mist, watch, harvest, eat.
